Diabetes is a disease that develops when the pancreas fails to make enough insulin – a hormone that regulates the amount of glucose in blood – or when the body is unable to effectively use insulin anymore.
In 2017, Europe had around 60 million people with diabetes.
It is estimated that in 2040 around 642 million people will have diabetes.
Unfortunately, more and more people are diagnosed with diabetes, with Europe having around 60 million diagnosed residents and approximately 20 million being not yet diagnosed with it.
In 2015, Lithuania had around 116,900 residents aged 20-79 with diabetes, with another 44,000 undiagnosed. And undiagnosed means untreated.
The whole world has a problem with this pandemic, which is directly linked to the population getting older, malnutrition, low physical activity and obesity.
Diabetes can cause dangerous complications: blindness, kidney troubles, diabetic neuropathies and blood vessel issues, heart disease, heart attack, leg amputation. It’s a chronic, progressing disease with no cure so far, but it’s possible to control it.
Up to 90 % of those with diabetes are diagnosed with the II type of the disease, which is typically an outcome of obesity, low physical activity or overeating. That means monitoring these factors and eating properly, exercising regularly, maintaining an optimal weight can prevent this disease or help control it.
Physical activity helps balance the amount of glucose in blood and reduces the chance of fat gathering in the abdominal area, even if the weight doesn’t decrease.
Sadly, exhausting diets or five days of going to the gym are not the right choice. We’re all very different, so consults of general nature from sport coaches, dietitians or physiotherapists are not always the answer to prevent diabetes, and some generic programmes might seriously harm the body. Physical activity has to be balanced with proper nutrition and rest.
Paliesiaus manor has a team of doctors and other specialists to create individual physical activity programmes for every patient according to the personal clinical and physiological state, using the unique methods of physical strain therapy. We can guarantee the positive results of treating chronic diseases as well as preventing them.
There’s a 500 square metre space for concerts. This environment was created to help with the positive health changes. The manor was established inside unique nature in the 17th century. At any time, only a small number of patients (up to nine people) can stay at the manor, therefore the specialists can pay the needed attention to the tiniest details, adapting to the individual needs of the guests. Only here standards are replaced by personalised methods.
Even if you don’t have any symptoms of the disease, you can strengthen yourself and prevent diabetes or obesity.
